Students from Years 7 and 8 spent the morning working together to tackle some of the problems faced by Southern Water as they seek to make sure houses, farms, hospitals and schools all have the water they need. Students had to design and build their own water supply network, guiding new pipes across railway lines and rivers and testing it with real water. As students worked on the problems in the classroom, Southern Water were working hard to begin replacing the water supply outside the Academy. At the end of the morning one team was picked as winners for the simplicity of their design and their thorough planning and were presented with goody bags. Morné Cloete, Southern Water’s Project Manager for the mains replacement scheme, said: “The Water Supply Challenge is a great way to help people understand some of the challenges we face in bringing them water to use every day. I was impressed with how well the pupils worked together in their teams and with the simple, yet effective, solutions which they came up with. We may well see some of them at Southern Water in years to come.”
